Daniel E Sickles was a congressman when he shot Burton Key, his wife's lover. He became the first to claim temporary insanity-and got away with it. Society at the time scorned him- not for killing a relative of Francis Scott Key, but for taking back his tarnished wife.
A political General in the Civil war, Appointed by Lincoln, Sickles commanded the III Corps at Gettysburg. He lost his leg in the battle and was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. During his recovery he engaged in a feud with General Meade over his generalship and who had one the Battle of Gettysburg. After the war he was instrumental in acquiring the land for what is now the Gettysburg National Park.
