Five Dollar Bill from the “Canal Bank” New Orleans - Inventory Number: CON 448

The New Orleans Canal and Banking Co. aka The Canal Bank was part of the financial foundation of the Deep South. Its buildings still stand today. It was founded in 1831, began issuing its own currency circa 1840, and flourished until the Great Depression. This is a scarce original $5 bill from the bank's early days. It's one of the most ornate banknotes ever printed. At least ten fancy V's, 5's and/or FIVE's are filled with flowers and playful cherubs. The large 5 on the right alone contains a nude, a cornucopia spilling coins, an eagle, fasces (bundle of rods with ax) and Washington's portrait. A large Franklin portrait appears on the left.
